To comment on Rex’s ideas. There are many creative ways to views the eight trigrams. But the standard five phase interpretation of them has fire and water trigram (kan / li) as primal phases, i.e. not paired.

Thunder and wind trigrams are wood phase.

There is a more advanced version of the practice for opening the eight extraordinary channels which I will begin teaching as part of Fusion 2/3.

I feel Aurobindo was involved in the Great Work of alchemy. He was a tantric whose focus was on transforming the here and now, not transcending it in the ordinary useage of getting away from or above the physical.
