Hangu Pass is where Lao Tzu was stopped by gatekeeper Yin Shi, who demanded he write down his wisdom. The rock “desk” in photo is where Lao Tzu allegedly composed in 5000 characters his literary jewel that defined Taoism. Here I’m standing in for Lao Tzu, some 2500 years later… I arrived totally skeptical, expecting a tourist trap – but the Qi here blew me away! Fall Asheville Tao Events: details below 1. Dear Lovers of Lao Tzu’s WondrousTransmission, I’ve just returned from the 2016 China Dream Trip. It was amazing and intense, linking up Huashan and Changbaishan sacred mountains in one trip. But that’s too much to write about immediately. I’d like to focus on the one place I had never been before – Hangu Pass, about two hours drive beyond Mt. Hua, east of Xian. General Yin Xi (Shi) was the official Guardian of Hangu Pass 2500 years ago. It was an important military pass over a ring of mountains that protected and allowed access in or out of the plains below that held China’s ancient capital of Chang’an. The jade statue – deep greenish-black ox with Lao Tzu’s luminous white face looking up at the light of the polestar (or its purple cloud emanation) is carved from a single stone. Yin Xi noticed the spiritual omen of a purple cloud approaching the pass. Purple is the color of the Pole Star’s inner light that was believed to control human destiny, as all the stars spiraled around its axis. In the I Ching, clouds are considered the Creative expression of Heaven. This purple cloud hovered above Lao Tzu (pinyin: Laozi), who was riding an ox (often depicted in Chinese art). Yin Xi, figuring he must be somebody spiritually important, stopped Lao Tzu and demanded he write down his wisdom before he would let Lao Tzu proceed toward the West. “The West” in Taoist literature had the high Kunlun mountains of Tibet, and was considered the home of Xi Wang Mu, the Queen Mother of the West, ruler of all the Tao immortals. She cultivated the orchards filled with the peaches of immortality – one bite and you were good for eternity.
Lao Tzu holding the Peach of Immortality. The peach is likely a sexual symbol, as sexual energy is the elixir that alchemically quickens one’s evolution in Taoist water & fire (kan & li) practice. The Chinese peach on the right shows how explicitly sexual the peach is. Lao Tzu’s 81 verses have endured as the “bible” of Taoist philosophy and religion (it is both). It is the root of many streams of Taoism that grew from its spiritual seed over the millennia. It was the first time to visit this site on a China Dream Trip. We’ll did a special ceremony to tune in and celebrate this profound portal that opens to the root wisdom of the Human Tao. Some are by Taoist scholars. Two that I like are The Definitive Tao Te Ching by Jonathan Star, and A Philosophical Translation of the Dao de jing: Making Life Significant by David Hall and Roger Ames. These will give you a technically more accurate reading, and the authors understand Taoist terminology. But most scholars don’t understand Taoist meditation and qigong, and so they miss important references to it in their translation. Someday I may write a commentary focused on those kinds of references. Many versions are inspired adaptations of other translations — by writers who love the classic, but who don’t speak or read classical Chinese. Those could be considered “New Age Taoists”. They are often poetic and speak to modern hearts, but may contain ideas and phrases projected by the editor-author. Ursula LeGuin did her version. Stephen Mitchell got paid $400,000. for his beautiful poetic version, yet he didn’t speak a word of Chinese. It has many Buddhist ideas added to it. Over time you’ll choose your favorite. Every version is good if you find value in it, if it inspires you on your own path or Way. In Taoism, there is no dogma or fixed path to follow; your life is your personal Way. You might take a few minutes to read the Wikipedia entry on Lao Tzu at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tao_Te_Ching to get an overview of various theories about Lao Tzu. Some scholars think he is a fiction. I personally accept the reality of his spiritual genius. Lao Tzu’s classic skillfully yet elusively sends a powerful message on how to live a life of balance and harmony. Its major theme is the importance of Return to Origin — connecting to the Original Qi spontaneously arising from Tao/Source within us. The Primordial Tai Chi and Big Dipper Star-stepping Qigong we practiced in China are methods of cultivating the “Original Breath of Life’. It’s a special kind of Qi , different from Yin-Yang Qi cultivated by most martial and medical tai chi and qigong forms.

When I arrived here, and saw the giant parking lot for tourist buses, I had very low expectations. But when our group did Primordial Tai Chi and Star Stepping Qigong in front of the small temple erected where the transmission was said to have occurred, I was blown away by the intense field of primordial energy (i.e. Yuan Qi). Powerful mountains and the fire & water crater at Mt. Changbai can create this and sustain it over time. It’s very unusual for this kind of Qi to be generated by a human event. Many iin the group felt this – it was like having your local personality or identity dissolved, leaving us to walk around in an ethereal daze! More about China to come in future newsletters.
