Dear Lovers of Cosmic Harmony and Balance,

I hope you enjoyed a summer filled with radiance, love, and growth. I enjoyed teaching five weeks of week-long retreats in the ancient Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville. I was deeply pleased to see the amazing changes so many people went through gracefully in a short period of time.

Then I visited my wife’s ancestral land in Alaska. I love Alaska’s primordial energy – you can really tune into the very pure Qi flowing into the North Pole (crown) of Mother Earth.

Now I’m one day into a new journey around the Sun (Saturday was my birthday). This year will complete my journey through the I Ching’s 64 hexagrams, one per year. Hopefully I’ll be able to hold some of the wisdom of the ancient Book of Unchanging Changes. I got a very favorable I Ching reading with exciting Lighting and Thunder to quicken the pace of my evolution, changing to Deep Contemplation.

I apply numerology to my biological age. Last year, 63, was a 9 (6 + 3). 9 is the number of maximum creativity and expansion. This year, 64, I’m back to being a one-year old (6 + 4 = 10 = 1 + 0 = 1). So I am exactly in sync with the age of my son Emerald. We’re growing up together! He’s teaching me how to laugh and play non-stop, I’m (trying) to teach him how to play wisely.

China Dream Trip August 2016: Dates Confirmed

Dear Dreaming-of-China Spiritual Adventurer,

This is the last chance to add yourself to the “early notice” signups for the next China Dream Trip. Just hit reply, put “China” in the subject line, and send. The early signups have first choice in reserving space.

The dates of the 2016 China Dream Trip are FIRM – you can plan around it. I cannot yet give final trip cost, as I’m waiting for a few more key costs (including Air China group ticket).

We are going to two of China’s most powerful sacred mountains, so this trip is attracting a lot of high level Taoist cultivators. But there is no pre-requisite for coming, other than a heart open to spiritual adventure and the willingness to regularly practice Primordial Tai Chi (DVD sent in advance for free) and Star Stepping Big Dipper Qigong (taught in China).

It’s a life-changing experience for everyone.

As in the past, you may either travel with the main group from Los Angeles, OR you can meet the group in Beijing (usually folks who have airline miles, live in a different country, want to arrive early or stay later in China, etc.).

For those who live in the USA, the cheapest option will be the group air fare that I arrange. It requires you travel both ways with the group: leave LAX late evening of August 12, return LAX 6 pm on August 30, 2016.

Here’s an outline of key trip dates:

Day 1:  Aug 12.   Depart LAX Friday late evening/Sat. 1:40 am)

Day 2: Aug. 13 Sat. Enroute – lose a day crossing Intl. Dateline.

Day 3: Aug. 14, Sunday. Arrive Beijing 5:30 am. Meet those starting in Beijing at Tiantan Hotel. Full day schedule, including qigong at Temple of Heaven, visit to Forbidden City.

Day 4 -5: Aug. 15-16. Beijing area. Primordial Tai Chi on Great Wall, Qigong Training in park, martial arts theatre show.

photo: Mt. Hua has Five Peaks, one for each of Five Elements. We stay a night atop West Peak (high peak on right).

Day 6-13: Aug. 17-24. In Xian ancient capital, and Huashan (Flower Mountain), including cave or monastery option.  This is China’s richest historical area, includes my favorite Taoist 8 Immortals Taoist Temple, vast Moslem night market, jade & amazing crafts shops, flea market with 2000 year old relics, Tang Dynasty dancing, Terra Cotta Warriors, the amazing Qi and beauty of climbing on Mt. Hua — the Taoist sacred mountain of the West.

Plus a first time visit (for a Dream Trip) to the actual Hangu Pass where Lao tzu transmitted the Tao Te Ching (Classic of the Natural Way of Integrity).

Meditating on Mt. Changbai’s north slope precipice. This cauldron is cooking at an intensely high vibrational level. This is China’s most active volcano, and could erupt at any time….hopefully after August 2016. 🙂

Days 14 – 18:  Aug. 25 – 29. Mt. Changbai, “Eternally White Mountain” area. This spiritually powerful volcanic lake is the root of Healing Tao lineage, where its founders – Taoist adepts One Cloud and White Cloud – achieved themselves. It’s the most pristine natural preserve in all of China, and the sacred “power mountain” of the last 400 years of Chinese Emperors.

We’ll ascend from both the North and West slopes to maximize our exposure. Plus training with local Taoist Ju Xi, and visits to beautiful volcanic sculpture and waterfall parks, optional trips to see Siberian tigers & a high quality local museum.

Day 19: Aug. 30 (Tuesday). Fly on Air China to Los Angeles. Currently scheduled to arrive same day in LAX at 6 pm. (We might arriver earlier, depending on an as yet undetermined flight from Mt. Changbai to Beijing).

I may not have the final price for another month, but I expect it to be in the same reasonable price range of previous Dream Trips. The flight to remote Mt. Changbai (borders Siberia and North Korea) will to the cost. For pricing on 2014 China Dream Trip, see:

https://www.michaelwinn.qlogictechnologies.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?rm=mode2&articleid=140#

To read more about Mt. Changbai, read my 2013 Tao Newsletter after my first exploratory visit, titled: China’s Crown Chakra: Mt. Changbai

Blessings on Your Creative and Loving Way,
Michael Winn

ps. The best preparation for this trip is to learn the Kan & Li (Water & Fire) level of meditation taught by homestudy or on retreat in North Carolina in early July 2015. That practice is exactly attuned to the alchemical frequency of the fire-water Qi of volcanic Heavenly Lake atop Mt. Changbai.

Tai Chi of Sun-Moon, Day-Night, Yin-Yang

Fall Equinox is a moment of exquisite balance between night & day, sun & moon. It opens the portal that is filled with Yuan Qi, Original Breath, the ultimate medium of cosmic healing and enlightenment hidden within all yin-yang patterns of manifestation.

Loving Your Inner White Dragon,

Michael Winn

Dear Lovers of Earth Cycles that Ground Us & Help Us Change,

The Chinese Year of the Goat Spring Festival just finished this last week. As long time readers know, I prefer to wait and actually experience the shift in energy before I write about it. Are you ready for another year’s spin with Mother Earth? Every year she has new energetic lessons for us, that help us change and grow. 2014 was a Male (Yang) Wood Horse – did you enjoy its thunderous changes and tap its creative impulse?

2015 should be much more relaxing, a Yin year of consolidation. We can still make leaps, but you’ll want to know where you are landing. The goat is the master of sure-footedness. It makes gentle and steady progress, one hoof at a time, even when the way seems dangerous or scary. It can move in harmony with the herd yet still pursue its own needs.

Is it a Goat or a Sheep or a Ram Year?

In the West, many astrologers call it a Sheep or Ram Year. But in China, Year of the Goat is standard. The confusion arises because the Chinese word yang in oracle bone script – the ancient characters found on bones used for divination in the Bronze Age – looks like an animal with two horns and a pointy face. This character can be interpreted as goat, sheep or ram in English. A goat is a “mountain yang”, a sheep is a “soft yang” and a Mongolian gazelle is a “yellow yang”.

But Chinese scholars agree it was a Goat that earned the “yang” a spot on the zodiac.
Why goat? One reason is because several thousand years ago the ancient Chinese highly valued goat – it was the food of royalty. While they valued the wool of sheep, few ate sheep, according to excavations from fire pits.

In ancient China, people ate six types of animals – horse, cow, goat, pig, dog and chicken – all included in the animal zodiac. China is a food-centric culture. The modern Chinese greeting for “how are you” is literally the phrase “Have you eaten?” The Chinese word for “envy” originally referred to a person salivating over a goat.

Han dynasty (206. b.c.e) scholar Dong Zhongshu described three virtues that people should learn from goats:

1) the goat doesn’t hurt people with its horn;

2) it never cries or howls;

3) its kids always bow down on front legs when drinking milk, symbolizing filial piety.

The word ‘beautiful’ in oracle bone script looks like a person wearing a head ornament of goat horns.

“Yang” is part of the Chinese character “xiang”, meaning auspicious. The two words were interchangeable in ancient Chinese. Yang is also a part of “shan”, for kindness and benevolence. Year of the Goat thus symbolizes blessings and good fortune. A 1,500 year old fable depicts five goats carrying crops in their mouth to save people suffering from years of drought in Guangzhou. Today it’s still known as the City of Goats.

Green Goat Temple in Chengdu China. Statues are in front of the Palace of the Three Pure Ones.  The Chinese rub different parts of the bronze goat statue for good luck, children, promotion, etc. The head gives long life and good health and has been polished by countless thousands of hopeful hands.

One of the most famous Taoist temples in China is the 1400 year old Green Goat Temple (Qing yang gong) in Chengdu. I have never heard of a temple in China to honor a sheep. My China Dream Trips often visit the Green Goat temple – it is one of my favorite temples, with a very special spiritual energy. According to legend, Green Goat Temple was originally a farmer’s market, where the founder of Taoism, Lao Tzu, gave his first teachings about the Natural Way (Tao). This temple was later built on the market site, and is said to be a holy place where immortals get together.

According to legend, Qing Yang Gong was said to be the birth place of the founder of Taoism, Lao Tsu, and is where he made the first sermon about Taoism. Ever since Taoism was established, this temple was said to be holy place for immortals to get together. – See more at: http://www.chinaodysseytours.com/chengdu/qing-yang-gong-temple.html#sthash.kvzWNrPn.dpuf

Sheep Are Defenseless, with Only One Row of Teeth

Even if goat is the correct zodiac animal, we may still find something instructive in the sheep archetype. The Chinese depiction of the virtuous goat mirrors the Christian depiction of sheep. The Bible describes Jesus as a lamb before he was crucified. The lamb’s lack of defense implies a total surrender to God for its protection.

George Harrison, born in Year of Water Sheep (1943). Was he inspired to create the Fab Four hairdo from his sheepish nature? Perhaps the sheep desire for harmony amongst the herd accounts for all his songs on love and peace..

Sheep cannot easily defend themselves. There are over 200 species of sheep. But only a few species – like Big Horn sheep – have horns. Most sheep are defenseless. They can flee or band together, but mostly have come to rely on shepherds and dogs for protection. Did you know that sheep only have only a lower set of teeth – but no teeth in the top row of their mouth? I find that quite amazing, and wonder about their evolutionary karma. Is the spiritual job of sheep to mirror to human their co-dependency on others to survive?

Sheep travel in flocks and follow their leader to new pastures. But not all sheep are meek followers. The leader is chosen for physical strength and aggressiveness. Sheep tracks are erratic, because when walking their head wags. As their head wags, they look behind with their left or right eyeball to spot predators hundreds of yards behind them.

To read an amusing parable on the Sheep Who Refused to be Food for Wolves, go to the Daily Sheeple site at: http://www.thedailysheeple.com/the-parable-of-the-sheep. This is a “prepper” or survivalist site. The parable illustrates the weak side of Sheep people who may tend to be followers rather than leaders. The parable’s message is: even if you are born a sheep, you can still take charge of your destiny.

Human Body as a Mini-Zodiac: Tao of Living Astrology

You would think measuring Time – the calendar business – would be a somewhat stable commodity. But wikipedia lists 28 different calendar systems around the world. It suggests that our perception of Time is strongly shaped by cultural influences. One reason I appreciate Chinese astrology is that it is generally based on actual natural cycles of Sun, Moon, Earth, and Polestar alignment, so the connection with nature stays immediate and fresh. It’s not a bunch of abstract mathematical-calendrical symbols imposed on Time by groups in ancient times.

The Chinese calendar is based on the interaction of earth cycles with heaven cycles. Human love and free will is designed to be a cosmic point of balance between Heaven and Earth. The Twelve Earthly Branches are popularly known as the Twelve Animals. It’s essentially an earth-centered zodiac instead of the Western sky-zodiac.

My readers know I teach experiential astrology, what I call Taoist Living Astrology.  The principle is that mental information about astrological symbols and cycles is unlikely to change your life. Information that is not converted into Qi  and absorbed into our body will ultimately either be discarded or become psychic-mental baggage that slows down our process of Self-realization.

The Way to use astrology to change our destiny is to get in touch with the actual natural beings that generate and chape our astrological chart. These are the beings of Mother Earth and iher inner zodiac with its twelve-animal psychic aspects; planetary beings, and beings like the sun, moon, and stars who have stellar- infused natural bodies arising directly from the Tao. These beings cannot be manipulated by dark forces or corrupted, so they offer a reliable and clear path back to Source. The dark side wants us to feel separate and far removed from Source.

Living Astrology requires that we meditate, use body-centered cosmological qigong, tai chi, rituals or properly focused prayers to communicate with these natural beings so that they have permission to assist us on our highest path in life. We humans must exert our Free Will, our creativity, if we want to harness these larger forces of the sky and deep earth. It is our job as humans to convert their impersonal cycles into creative and loving energy that benefits human personal growth.

The Twelve Animals are reflected within the human body by twelve organ and bowel spirits, the model used by Chinese medicine to map the body’s meridians. These twelve body-spirits are what forms our body-mind. They control all the functions of our personality and health. As the earth’s inner zodiac of 12 Animals changes, our animal body with its 12 organ-zodiac changes with it. It’s simple alchemy: as without, so within.

L: 12 Animal diagram shows repeating sequence. R: Bronze plate in Green Goat Temple in Chengdu. Goat is the 8th animal in 12 zodiac signs.

In addition to the “eight pillars” of a Chinese astrology chart,  the ninth and most powerful force that cannot be charted is the factor of human free will. The whole point of Taoist self-cultivation is to transcend our astrology chart and shape one’s destiny using the astrological influences as guidance and support, not resistance and limitation.

To capture these astrological forces closer to their source requires attuning oneself to the Being or Spirit of the planets (including Mother Earth), the sun, moon, stars, and beyond. The closer we get to the source level, the easier it is to shape our highest worldly and spiritual destiny. This requires raising the vibrational level of one’s Qi using inner alchemy meditation and qigong or related body-centered practices. When these cosmic forces are initially viewed from the level of the personality, they may seem overpowering and unchangeable.

Learn How Your Chart Relates to Current Astrological Phases

The female wood goat in 2015 has a mix of yin fire, yin earth, and yin wood – stimulating the heart/small intestine, spleen-stomach, and liver/gall bladder. Thus in a heavenly-stem wood year like 2015, our liver & gallbladder Qi is especially stimulated to flow more strongly. That will nourish folks who are deficient in wood, and put others who already have a lot of wood into excess.

To find out if you have any Goat energy in your chart, or if you have weak or strong wood, please get a Chinese Astrology reading on my website (ironically, the software was written years ago as sheep, not goat). Get your FREE Chinese astrology reading at: https://www.michaelwinn.qlogictechnologies.com/astrologycenter.html

My astrology program  will generate a diagram with five circles that tells you which of the five elements/organs are weak and strong, so you can have insight into how this year might affect you. For example, if you have a weak wood element at birth (small circle in the diagram representing liver-gall bladder), then you will feel nourished by the influx of Yin Wood energy this year. That will overlfow into creative activity in your life this year.

There are many terms on the astrology site that require interpretation by a professional Chiinese astrologer. If you wish to be referred to one, please put Get Reading in the subject line and  hit reply, or email info@michaelwinn.qlogictechnologies.com.

A goat can take a leap without taking a big risk – because it is so sure-footed. It represents mastery of grounding. When we are deeply grounded, we trust our every step.

The last Wood Goat Year was in 1955 (sixty years ago). Other recent goat years are Fire Goat 1967, Earth Goat 1979, Gold/Metal Goal 1991, and Water Goat 2003. Note that the month of January is assigned to the previous year, as most modern Chinese astrologers use Feb. 4 as the solar start date of the New Animal Year.  The lunar calendar didn’t start until Feb. 18 of this Goat year, leaving a very large two week cusp between Feb. 4 and Feb. 18 where both the Horse and Goat are influencing one’s chart (if born in that time period).

The Five Phases or Five Elements cycle of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water comes from the heaven cycle. These five phases move in yin-yang pulsations called the Ten Heavenly Rays or Celestial Stems. 12 animal- earth years x 5 heavenly elements = 60 year cycle. (It’s actually a 60 year cycle that repeats itself twice, 10 Stems x 12 Branches = 120 years). This calendar year 2015 is mapped back 4712 years in Chinese history. but as an actual calendar was only officially used for the last 2200 years. The earlier 2500 years were calculations back in time to a hypothetical point of greatest alignment between axis of the earth, sun, moon, and polestar.

The 60-year calendar cycle was used in the earliest written records in China, recorded on almost every oracle bone divination dating back to 1250 BC (over 3,250 years ago!). The 60 year calendar was adopted by Japan in 553. Vietnam, a former province of China, still uses it with Goat rather than Sheep, reflecting the ancient Chinese preference. The Tibetan calendar also borrowed this 60 year cycle in 1024, and also uses goat.

One key point is that everyone on the planet is influenced by the Goat Year cycle, not just people born in it. It is also misleading to attribute a single set of qualities to people born in the Goat Year. Chinese astrology is more sophisticated than this. Someone born at noon will absorb some qualities of a Fire goat, in the evening you’ll absorb Water goat influence, etc. So there is a wide range of goat personalities. But all goat/sheep/ram people w ill share some traits in common

                                  .

The 12 Earthly Branch are embedded within the 12  two-hour periods of Chinese medicine’s body clock. It means that there is more Qi in the body this year during the hours of 1 – 3 pm (the small intestine-yin fire goat branch hour). This is basic Taoist microcosmic – macrocosmic theory, the alchemical principal “as above, so below”. So if you want to tune into the Green Goatess that dominates the body of the Earth and our human body in 2015, the best time to meditate on this is in the afternoon, from 1- 3 pm.

Third Year of Zodiacal Animal Fire Hidden in Goat Year

The 12 animal cycle of the Chinese zodiac include Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. But these animals move in elemental trinities.

This year is the final of a three year cycle of fire. 2013 was a water element from heaven, but snake from earth held intense solar fire. The 2014 wood horse was about fire from sun absorbed into the earth surface, via pounding hooves. The 2015 wood goat is about fire whose heat is sustained deep within the ground.

This third kind of fire is the source of Goat Year’s good fortune. The deep earth fire nourishes growth of things that grow – the wood element – the ripening of plants and trees that goats feed on. In this third year of fire we can harvest the fruits of our labors during the previous two fire years. Perhaps some of us did not work hard on ourselves for the last two years – you will not have as much to harvest by way of good fortune.

2016 is the year of Yang Fire Monkey.  But Monkey’s nature is a metal-gold animal. (You can read this nature by using my astrology calculator online and checking the chart on Feb. 4 in the year of any animal). Thus 2015 is the bridge year between Yin Wood and Yang Fire at the Heavenly Stem level, and between Goat’s inner yin fire & yin earth and Monkey’s inner yang metal on the Earthly Branch level.  It means 2015 can be a double turning point. If you had great difficulties in 2013 and 2014, 2015 could be a chance to do better. If you’ve been working hard, the harvest in 2015 should be sure-footed and easy.

Susan Levitt, author of Taoist Astrology, is a master of capturing the essence of these cycles in a few words:

This year is a time for diplomacy, kindness, and healing…intimacy, family, and friendships. We can be more caring, gentle, and sensitive with each other. This is the year to develop a wild heart, open to love and acceptance on all levels. …Express your creativity, artistic and spiritual development, and cultivate beauty. Like fresh growth in springtime, a Wood year is time to grow, branch out, and explore.

Last year yang Horse 2014 was the time to go out and get. Sheep {or goat} is a yin, receptive animal so allow things to come to you. It’s approach is far more gentle. We can slow down and make plans with the support of friends and family. The time for risk and daring will be yang Fire Monkey 2016. Monkey adventures have more chance of success if you strengthened your foundation in Sheep year.

Goat, in addition to Female Fire element, contains Female Earth, which has the magical power of creating something from nothing (empty womb births life). Goat also contains Female Wood element from its Earthly Branch, which is amplified by the 2015 Female Wood Celestial Ray from heaven. This is double wood nourishment for growth, from above and below.

Wood is also the seed, the power to self-impregnate all that flourishes when properly implanted in Female Earth. This combination is what makes the Goat 2015 a year of potential good fortune. This is especially true for those with a constitutional weak wood/liver or gallbladder. Again, visit my free astrology calculator on my site to determine your 5 elements constitution..

                                      Yin Personality of the Goat/Sheep

Most astrologers emphasize the yin virtues of gently grazing sheep or goat, and some feel it is the most yin animal of the zodiac. Wikipedia summarizes well these yin qualities:

People born in a year of the Goat are generally believed to be gentle mild-mannered, shy, stable, sympathetic, amicable, and brimming with a strong sense of kindheartedness and justice.

They have very delicate thoughts, strong creativity, and perseverance, and acquire professional skills well. Although they look gentle on the surface, they are  tough on the inside, always insisting on their own opinions in their minds. They have strong inner resilience and excellent defensive instincts.

Though they prefer to be in groups, they do not want to be the center of attention. They are reserved and quiet, most likely because they like spending much time in their thoughts. Goats like to spend money on fashionable things that give them a first class appearance. Although goats enjoy spending money on the finer things in life, they are not snobbish.

Famous Goat People with Strong Yang Leadership

L: Bighorn Sheep. R: duelling mountain goats, each holding their ground.

Both goat and sheep are docile, peaceful animals who can live closely with humans. But they have remarkable endurance that sustains their spirit and gives them strong yang vitality to keep moving ahead. People born in a Goat Year are considered to have an iron will and enterprising spirit underlying their soft, fluffy façade. In alchemy, this is called yang-within-the-yin.

So we should not overlook its yang aspect. Sheep and goats gather in a herd around the most aggressive male yang animal as their leader. These leaders hold a very strong dose of the yin or female fire hidden within every one of these pacific grazing animals. Examples of business leaders born in Wood Goat Year 1955 who had great, sure-footed persistence and gathered “large herds” include Steve Jobs and Bill Gates – the two most successful entrepreneurs of our time.

When dealing with tasks, they are not impulsive. They prefer to analyze a situation carefully so they can complete it satisfactorily – one sure-footed hoof at a time. In relationships they are gentle and cultivated, liked by others, but this can vary depending what time of day they are born. Those born at noon (more fire) tend to be irritable.

Those born in the morning or evening tend to be more passive and conservative, but very reliable. They make great home-keepers or fit comfortably into large corporations or other team structures. They like family/group order. In terms of business, they offer a wonderfully stable helping hand.

One chinese site describes people in this sign as having “a flexible and bright body. The men may look like sissy. The women have a devilish charm to the opposite sex, as they are mostly beautiful, plump, clear in skin and slim in waist”. Some well known “sissy” creative artists  born in a goat year include Mick Jagger, Robert de Niro,  Mel Gibson, Gene Hackman, and Michael Caine…:)

Mark Twain, arguably America’s greatest literary genius, was a Goat. Michelangelo, one of the world’s greatest artists, was also a goat….these are creative leaders…not followers. But it’s true that the number of followers in the herd are far more numerous than the leaders. But followers don’t have to be weak; it can mean being a strong supporter and advocate of art, beauty, family values, group harmony, corporate/team success. All goats/sheep have that sure-footed persistence, whether they are yin or yang versions of it.

                                       \

UK reader Brian Lowry identified another famous sheep/goat person story: Coco Chanel, an poor orphan who became a fashion queen. She started sewing things in the orphanage as a child, and persisted at it until she reached the top of her field.

Lowry also pointed out the goat-year born Dowager Empress CIxi of the Manchurian Ching (Qing) Dynasty. Cixi was a powerful and charismatic woman who displayed the goat’s inner will power. She was the only woman to rule during the 400 years of China’s last dynasty.

The daughter of a manchurian merchant, Cixi beat out sixty young girls to join the flock of hundreds of imperial concubines. She got pregnant with the emperor’s only son, then when he died, she used her reading and writing skills to overcome a traditional ban on women in politics. She broke many political rules (appointed her weak nephew as emperor) while maneuvering her way as Dowager Empress into ruling a third of the world’s population from “behind the curtain” for 47 years (1861 – 1908).

Cixi was considered compassionate, another goat quality. She refused to use the traditional “slow slicing of the body while alive” torture method on the chief minister she deposed in a coup, She instead had him quickly beheaded….standards of compassion are relative. :). Two other deposed ministers were “given the white silk”, a cloth to honorably commit suicide by hanging themselves. She displayed her high moral standards (for imperial China) by allowing the families of eight deposed ministers to live. A ruler had to be tough to hold China – the world’s largest human herd – together during the extremely difficult times of Opium Wars and foreign invasions.

This tension in China between the shepherd (currently China’s communist party inner circle) and the herd (1.5 billion group-minded Chinese people) is still being played out today. As long as the people trust the party shepherds, the herd will follow them. But if the party is not sure-footed enough, and loses the trust-earth element of the people, it could mean a revolution. The Goat embodies both the qualities in this dynamic within one animal – wilful inner independence but outer harmony with the herd.

Secrets of growing a powerful Energy Body
Psychic alchemy: Open 8 Core Channels

• Heal chronic illness & deep pre-natal trauma
• 8 Extraordinary Vessels Qigong (on DVD)
• Pangu Mystical Qigong (on DVD)

Open the Macro-Cosmic Orbit by linking chi flow in the Eight Extraordinary (“psychic”) channels. These channels link your pre-natal and post-natal energy bodies, i.e. the deep structure of how you birth yourself each flowing moment. Learn to purify your aura & regulate your Energy Body with belt & thrusting channels. Give to and Receive chi from the environment with Positive & Negative Arm & Leg channels.

The 8 Extra Vessels connect the inner and outer chi field, and allow you to “dance” between your inner and outer life. The Wudang Mountain version of the macro-cosmic orbit will also be taught as the most powerful internal method I’ve found for integrating the 8 Extraordinary Vessels into a continuous flowing circuit.

The macro-orbit is the foundation for opening chi flow to 8 Original Forces of Universe (I Ching trigram-tones). Powerful “8 Extraordinary Vessels” qigong form makes this practice simple to remember. It heals deep psychic imbalances not reached by acupuncture. Many mysterious and chronic illnesses can be healed at the level, much faster than using acupuncture or herbs.

Another new practice taught is my custom developed “9 Spirals of the Energy Body” in the four directions to integrate the Five Shen with the Five Directional Dragons. This practice connects the internal flow of your macro-cosmic orbit out to the edge of the universe and back! A wonderfully empowering and healing journey.

This course lays a strong foundation for Healing Love and Water & Fire (Lesser Kan & Li) Inner Sexual Alchemy.

Pre-req: Qigong Fundamentals 1&2 (Orbit, Healing Sounds) by live or homestudy. It’s also optimal to learn Fusion 1 Emotional Alchemy first
,
but they can be learned in reverse order.

Why You should Sleep on a Wool Mattress

Have Astrologers Pulled the Wool Over Our Eyes?

Most Year of Sheep analyses have missed the most important point about sheep: the wonderful qualities of WOOL itself. What a gift to the world it is! I sleep on an inch of New Zealand organic wool atop an organic latex mattress. The wool holds the Qi I cultivate with Taoist Dream practice, as well as providing cool airflow space between me and the latex foam even in summer. I also have shawls made from baby goat hair that are much finer than wool, called pashmina in Nepal where I bought them.

I’m planning to buy 75 mattresses for my to-be-built retreat center. So I did a lot of research and tested many mattresses to find the highest quality of Qi. I discovered many beds are physically comfortable but their Qi is too synthetic and disturbs the body’s meridians. They may be too hot or too cold. I eventually settled on Natura, a canadian company that uses organic New Zealand wool to top every organic latex mattress. They are guaranteed to last 30 years without sagging.

As a service I’m currently selling Natura mattresses to Tao Dream practitioners who want the ultimate feng shui edge in their nighttime journeys. I’m happy to extend this my readers.

Visit http://www.naturaworld.com/products/product_types/mattresses/ to see what you want. Tthen ontact me if you want to get it at near-wholesale prices. I can save you several thousand dollars. A good mattress is a major investment, but we spend a third of our lives on it, so its worthwhile to get the best.

And be sure to sign up for my Tao Dream practice sleep-shop on May 16 – 17 in Asheville. If you cannot make it, get the homestudy audio – a recording of a three day workskhop in Holland is now available, with my most recent insights and refined qigong methods.

Love Your Body: Grounding is Key to Good Health

Wearing natural wool from very grounded animals or sleeping on their vibration at night is a nice external support. But ultimately, we must ground ourselves internally. Most modern people are poorly grounded, and are not living fully in their bodies. This is the real cause of a world-wide epidemic of stress-related diseases. If you can just relax into your body, it may heal spontaneously because Qi will flow into it more easily.

This grounded goat year is supportive of those who practice body-centered methods
like qigong, tai chi, yoga, feldenkrais, other body-work systems.

This is a good year to get regular massages — a year to Love Your Body. Getting grounded in your body is the first step to Sure-footed Good Fortune. Our resistance, our body-inertia, often comes from Qi stuck in our stressed out heads. This is a constant focus in most of my DVDs and homestudy courses.

I Ching Goat Hexagram. Why Wear RED Underwear?

I Ching Hexagram 11: Great Peace, “3 Yang” below is often interpreted as thaving Goat energy. The hexagram is named Great Peace or Harmony as Heaven’s 3 Yangs below are supporting Earth above. It is also known as Pervading and Great Rituals.

In Chinese New Year festival of the Goat Year, Chinese like to greet each other with san-yang-kai-tai , which means a”May Triple Yang energy bring Great Good Fortune to you!” Yang is the positive, growing Qi of the universe.  Since the goat is also pronounced Yang, it is a play on words – “May you enjoy Triple Goat Good Fortune!”

The saying comes from Taoism, which is the foundation of Chinese culture in many ways. The “triple yang” phrase is actually taken from the 3000 year old Taoist I Ching, The Book of Unchanging Changes. Three solid lines in the bottom are three Yang, which represents Heaven (Sky) rising up from Earth. Three broken lines on the top are three Yin, which represents Earth (Ground) relaxing down to Heaven below.  IHexagram 11 a perfect alchemical polarity.  I consider it the most auspicious hexagram out of the 64 possibilities.

Strong Yang energy is going up from the ground. This natural phenomenon is connected to the New Year’s time as beginning Spring, but it is also the energy of the Goat Year.

Hexagram 18: Clearing Corruption  changes to Hexagram 46, Ascend the Sacred Mtn.

I did my annual I Ching reading on the Chinese cycle for 2015. I use Stephen Karcher’s Total I Ching, which I strongly recommend all my readers to purchase (I keep it in stock, email info@healngtaousa.com).

This Goat Year I got hexagram 18: Renovating Pestilence & Corruption. It means we have to clear out our old psychic garbage and ancestral patterns before we have room for our full abundance. It’s a positive hexagram (“The Way is Open”). I’m personally dealing with cleaning up corruption in the leadership of a Tao organization, so very appropriate for me.

Line six changed the situation to hexagram 46, Ascending the Sacred Mountain. Hexagram 46 is definitely a goat activity, climbing the mountain, one sure-footed hoof at a time. It’s similar to Capricorn in Western astrology, sign of the she-goat. But before we can ascend to the heights, we need to clear the corrupt energies in the valley of our daily life (hexagram 18).

Is Goat UN-lucky for those born in it? Cure is Red Underwear!

Some Chinese accept the superstition that nine out of ten born in a Yang (Goat) year will be unhappy in life. Some expectant mothers scheduled Caesarean sections to give birth during the horse year, to avoid this curse.

In Chinese culture, a year of one’s birth sign – benmingnian, or ‘origin life year’ – is unlucky. So it applies to about one-twelfth of the population every year.

One feng shui cure for this is to wear red underwear. You will see red underwear sold at supermarkets and street markets in China. Red is believed to have the spiritual fire needed to ward off bad luck and misfortune. For the people born in a year of the goat (1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003), red underwear is a must for 2015.

For the Chinese, New Year’s Eve is often marked by embarrassing interrogations of singles as to why they are not yet married (= misfortune). To solve this problem an interesting, but often ridiculous solution has appeared — renting a boyfriend or girlfriend for the New Year. There are websites and agents specialized in this business. Taobao, China’s largest online retailer, has a section for fake boyfriend and girlfriend rentals. The price is about 100 yuan (16 USD) a day.

Do 60 Year Goat Cycles Repeat History? 1955 to 2015

Goat folks are generally described as “peace loving” and “kind”. Presumably this would carry over to the whole planet during goat years, especially during a Wood Goat Year with its flowering Qi.  The zodiac theory is that Goat Year is one of increased harmony and cooperation. Is it historically true?

Checking wikipedia’s calendar for 1955 (last wood goat year) seems to bear this out. There were an amazingly high number of treaties that year. Among the many treaties signed were the Baghdad Pact, the Middle East Treaty Organization, the Warsaw Treaty on Friendship, and the first Geneva Summit between Soviets and allied powers, West Germany joined NATO only ten years after the end of WWII. 16 nations joined the U.N. simultaneously, after years of moratorium on admitting new members during the Korean War.

The AFL-CIO merged, and the movement towards racial integration in America made huge leaps. Rosa Parks famously refused to give up her bus seat in Alabama, and racial segregation ithat year was outlawed on interstate trains and buses.

Hopefully this will replay itself this year, since there are plenty of wars happening around the planet that are in need of a good peace treaty – Ukraine, Syria, widespread sturggles across the Middle East, and the perpetual struggles against racism, sexism, religious bias, etc.

But let’s not forget there are elemental clashes this Goat year: wood is attacking the earth element, and can lead to clashes. In 1955, a soviet battleship exploded at its moorings in Sevastopol, killing 608, the worst soviet naval disaster. Ironic that 60 years later they seized a Ukrainian battleship along with Sevastopol and Crimea.

One very black sheep was born in 1955, destined to destroy one of the great harmonizers on the planet. This was Mark David Chapman, the murderer of John Lennon, a global bard for love and harmony. The moral? Sheep who lose their protective herd-sense can go crazy.

Goat Year is supposed to be a time for nesting with family & friends. 1955 saw the opening of Disneyland, the Mickey Mouse club had its debut on TV. Ray Croc opened his first MacDonalds in Illinois. I remember clearly the novel thrill of our family eating in our car at one of its first drive-ins….fortunately my dietary standards have evolved since then. But that was also before chemists took over the food industry. They used to serve real food. 🙂

Goat years are said to favor artists. One of my favorite authors, Vladimir Nabokov, published Lolita in 1955, rockering him to international fame. Lolita was a lyrical, dark parody on obsessive romantic love. I wrote my Senior Fellow thesis at Dartmouth on Nabokov as a master of the absurd, reviewing his entire oeuvre in Russian and English. But perhaps Nabokov never would have been discovered had it not been for the 1955 Goat Year support for artists.

Financial Outlook for 2015 Goat Year

It is silly to generalize about one’s destiny or how the stock market will do based on just the animal yearly influence (Goat this year). That is what you will find on a chinese restaurant placemat.

Eight Pillars, the most popular Chinese astrology system, charts the heaven-stem and earth-branch influences on the year, month, day, and hour. Each of us is a unique complex of these eight forces – plus the 9th force of human Free Will. Any national or planetary astrology chart is equally complex.

Yet the energy of elestial wood may have a general beneficial effect on finances. It  represents an expanding economy, which some believe is beginning to flower. Unemployment is down, wages are moving up, and costs have stabilized or lowered. The wood energy from Heaven will support these trends, and make a serious economic crash less likely.

Goat Years are generally regarded as a time to not take unnecessary risk. Be sure-footed in your investments.

Wood industries represent growth and change. Wood industries include architecture, manufacturing, fashion, food, publications like newspapers, magazines and books, and education.

The strong Wood element in 2015 may attack metal businesses according to 5-element Control Cycle theory.

Metal industries that might suffer includes banking, technology (hardware), automobile manufacturing, engineering, and entrepreneurs or CEOs. This year’s energy supports those who are humanitarian and lead from a team-building mission.

But I would not invest big money in the stock market  based on these broad energetic principles. Some industries may be nurtured to do better than others this year, but ultimately everything depends on the individuals in the management teams formed within any business. A team of determined goat managers could overcome large cycle forces and suceed.

The general goat year management advice is to avoid direct confrontations. Compromise and negotiation will achieve more than conflict;

Open the Macro-Cosmic Orbit by linking chi flow in the Eight Extraordinary (“psychic”) channels. These channels link your pre-natal and post-natal energy bodies, i.e. the deep structure of how you birth yourself each flowing moment. Source needs a pathway to flow into the physical body, and this is the pathway.

Many mysterious and chronic illnesses can be healed at this 8 Extra Vessels level, much faster than using ordinary 12 meridian acupuncture or herbs.

Another new practice taught is my recently developed “9 Spirals of the Energy Body” in the four directions to integrate the Five Vital Organ Spirits (Shen)  with the Five Directional Dragons. This practice connects the internal flow of your macro-cosmic orbit out to the edge of the universe – and back! A wonderfully empowering and healing journey.

This course lays a strong foundation for Healing Love and Water & Fire (Kan & Li) Alchemy.

The 9 Major Benefits of Fusion of the Five Elements 2 & 3:

Build a more powerful Energy Body by making conscious the deep energetic structure of your body-mind. You become far more powerful energetically in all spheres of your life. Everyone needs more energy; few understand where to find it and how to keep it balanced. Fusion 2/3 offers a template for a dynamic, flexible, grounded, and continuously flowing Energy Body.

Activate the relationship between your 5 body-spirits and the 8 extraordinary vessels. Fusion 1 develops the pearl as the integration and purification of ego consciousness. Fusion 2/3 moves the pearl through the 8 channels. These 8 channels are the deep pathways the 5 inner “body spirits” of our heart-mind (“xin”) use to energetically manage our biology, our psychology, and our spirituality. Cosmologically, this is equivalent to hard wiring 5-phase and 8-trigram/8-cosmic force theory into one.

Open chi flow internally in the Macro-cosmic Orbit. The Micro-cosmic orbit taught in Qigong Fundamentals 2 balances internal yin-yang chi flow. The Macro orbit adds in the arm and leg channels, which balances the chi flow between the environment and our body. It functionally integrates the chi flow between our inner self and our outer self/world. The macro orbit creates a wonderful feeling of deeper harmony with all that is around us. This Fusion 3 practice is made simple and easy-to-embody by use of the unique 8 Extraordinary Vessels Qigong form, which I custom-developed from years of practice.

Gain a powerful tool for self-healing, especially chronic illness and “mystery illnesses” that don’t respond to other treatments. Since the healing with the 8 Extraordinary Vessels occurs at a deeper level, it dissolves chronic diseases that are hard to cure, and stubborn mental-emotional patterns that do not respond to standard medical or psychological techniques.

5.Learn to tap into the most effective secrets of Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM). TCM (“Traditional Chinese Medicine”, invented about 50 years ago) does not use the 8 extraordinary vessels. It’s because the 8 Extraordinary Vessels are deep meridians, mostly below the skin level, thus not easily accessible to acupuncture. These 8 deep ‘reservoirs and canals” feed the 12 superficial (vital organ) meridians. If the 8 deep channels are balanced, all 12 of the regular channels will automatically self-balance.

Private studies show that 8 Extra treatments work faster and have a higher success rate of healing than regular 12-meridian acupuncture. 8 extra acupuncture treatments are slowly becoming known in the west, using ion-pumping cords and master-coupling points where the channels begin and start. But these channels are much more powerful when opened internally and in conjunction with pearl of inner will refined in Fusion 1.

6.Grow deep wisdom with “psychic alchemy”. Fusion teaches you to become a “Living I Ching” (Book of Unchanging Changes, 3000 year old classic that is foundation of Taoism). Learn the connection between the 8 deep core channels in your body and the 8 trigrams of the I Ching as symbolic system for mediating the 8 cosmic forces that hold form in place and dictate all patterns of change.

This pattern of “8” is not just some Chinese myth – it is found in biological cell division, in DNA structure, and in sacred geometry of the 8 points of the cube/earth element. The 8 trigrams of the I Ching are used for divination. When you activate 8 deep channels awareness in the body, you become a highly intuitive or psychic person. You begin to spontaneously receive more information from the larger chi field of the environment.

Supercharge the spinal cord, its physical nerve plexus and its subtle energy wiring with the Fusion 2 method of wrapping the spine with golden light (chi) of your inner pearl. This intense practice is like changing your body’s internal communication system from slow dialup to high speed internet.

8.Learn numerous practical ways to interface your physical body and your Energy Body. The two most important are using the belt channels for grounding and psychic protection, and activating the left, right, and center thrusting channels to clear internal blockages and extend your awareness deep into earth or high into heaven. The pearl can be extended like an antenna above the head or below the ground to receive cosmic chi frequencies without static. When core channels flow in continuous yin-yang circuits, they form an energetic torus (donut shaped aura) that is self-recharging.

The purified chi of your pearl can clean your aura and spine if used to “slice” through energy blockages. Pearl is also used to rejuvenate your senses (especially helpful for eyes of computer users) with internal figure-8 spiraling techniques.

Open pathways of communication between your Original Spirit, pre-natal self and your post-natal (physical) self. The pearl and the 8 Extra Vessels are like half-way meditators between your physical body and your formless inner self. Thus Fusion internal technology can be used to heal trauma that occurred in your mother’s womb. It facilitates downloading whatever our body-mind needs from the infinite, formless sea of chi within. Every human being was born from this dark ocean of potential energy. But more important is to realize we all carry that ocean of chi inside of us, and learn how to use it.
Pre-req: Fusion 1, live or by homestudy. Learning the energy channel work of Fusion 2/3 without doing the emotional body/inner pearl work of Fusion 1 is also possible, but not optimal. Email me first.

Michael Winn youtube interview on Lucid Dreaming Qigong & Taoist Self-Cultivation (40 min.): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-dHwroC9GU&feature=youtu.be

The youtube interview is long, but worth your time. It goes deep into my personal history as a lucid dreamer since I was a teenager. My night life got so active, I eventually ran a “Night School” in which I taught my day time friends the art of Lucid Flying in the dream world. I also explore the relationship between Taoist qigong and internal alchemy meditation, which has greatly raised my skill level and blurred the line between my day and night realities.

My integration of qigong and Taoist internal alchemy has allowed me to go in my daytime meditations to the same realms that are possible in the dream plane. The point of Tao dream practice is to take some shortcuts, as there is less resistance in the astral plane. But dream practice doesn’t necessarily give day time skill, so you need inner alchemy skill (neidan gong) to achieve complete mastery of one’s destiny.

My final conclusion: there is only One Self, dreaming both the day and night realities! But functioning from that Self (vs. the personality) requires discipline and training. My youtube interview is followed by spectacular images of Flower Mountain (Huashan ) in China, made famous by Chen Tuan, the Taoist Dream Immortal.  Photos taken on China Dream Trips. We’ll be visiting Huashan’s famous “dream caves” in May 2014 – see below.

Inside Chi Flows Naturally:

Dear Lovers of Having Your Cake and Eat it Too,

There is a tug of war going on in most people. It’s between the tangible personal needs  of their ego and the distant inner whisper of their soul. I’ve counseled thousands of students during my  three+ decades as a spiritual teacher. The Number One Question, and main cause of confusion?

Which voice do I follow to find my true path in life?

Easy question to ask, hard to answer. What part of our psyche is asking the question? Do we listen to the voice of immediate practicality, or the voice from an unfathomable future or higher self promising spiritual reward? Partners, family, parents, friends, Culture, Big Religion, Big Science, economic necessity, spiritual guides and ancestors are all chiming in at the same time.

People are legitimately confused because what they “hear” in their head is a roaring cacophony of conflicting voices, Welcome to the Kingdom of the Monkey Mind. Making it even more confusing, there are plenty of stories in books and films (= Culture voice) about people who have money, fame, and beautiful sexy partners, but whose lives are a soggy alcohol or drug-crazed messy divorce. They appear to have little of the ego happiness that one presumes comes with worldly good fortune.

We also know of “spiritual types” who are struggling financially, who physically appear pasty-faced and weak, and don’t seem to be emanating bliss or making tangible contributions to community life. They are not inspiring models, even as they feel driven to make progress towards an inner state of meditative peace. So pursuing worldly benefit vs. spiritual reward can seem like a very elusive shell game, regardless of which voice you listen to.

Ego vs. Soul Struggle Well-debated in Ancient China

This conflict between following the ego’s practical voice of meeting worldly needs vs. the voice calling for the awakening of our soul is not new. It’s not unique to our culture. The ancient Taoists have been debating this issue for thousands of years. Traditionally it has taken the form of debate over which to cultivate first: worldly destiny (ming) or original nature (xing, pronounced shing).

Worldly Destiny advocates (known as Southern School of Inner Alchemy) call for cultivating sexual and body-centered energy first, to lay a strong foundation and yin-yang balanced vessel for later spiritual progress. Today, advocates of this path might start with medical and martial forms of qigong/tai chi. They would seek the perfect romantic partner. Those strengthen your body and energize your psyche.

The Original Nature folks are from the Northern School, most famously Dragon Gate sect of Quanzhen (Complete Perfection) Taoism. They focus on directly cultivating our essence that will survive death. They view sex as a distraction. They are going straight for immortality, but allow — secondarily — that completing worldly destiny and cultivating bodily health afterwards has some value.

If you want an excellent summary of this debate in China, read the book chapter by Fabrizio Pregadio posted in my Tao Articles archive called Daoist Scholars Illuminate the Way. I consider Pregadio one of the best academics on neidan gong (internal alchemy) today. His website http://www.GoldenElixir.com has excellent translations of inner alchemy texts.

Pregadio’s chapter, Destiny, Vital Force, or Existence?
Meanings of Ming and Xing in Daoist Internal Alchemy
is long, but worth reading for serious cultivators.  https://www.michaelwinn.qlogictechnologies.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?rm=mode2&articleid=192. If you like it, consider getting the entire book, it has chapters by many other top scholars. Pregadio also offers the best translation of China oldest alchemy text, The Triplex Unity (Cantong Qi).

The limitation of academia? Scholars don’t know orally transmitted cultivation methods, nor practice the methods they glean from written texts. It’s DOING the internal practices that confers benefit and self-knowledge, not external KNOWING ABOUT them. But scholars can frame the historical issues and bring to life many wise ancient voices. This gives clarity to us moderns in choosing one spiritual practice or path over another.

The very reason I run a summer Healing Tao University retreat program is so Westerners can get out of their philosophical armchair, and into their body. People actually master the practical DOING and get benefits in their lives, not just in their head. (see summer retreat listings below).

Healing Tao: Personal Health & Happiness Comes First

Where is the Healing Tao USA lineage positioned on this spectrum of cultivating worldly ego vs. spiritual self? I visited Mt. Changbai in August 2013, where the Healing Tao lineage originated with the transmission from Taoist recluse White Cloud, about whom almost nothing is known. White Cloud taught the seeker One Cloud in the 1920’s or early 30’s. The lineage was picked up later in Hong Kong by a bright young high school student named Mantak Chia, who eventually brought it to America in 1976.

It was at the base of Mt. Changbai that I met a double PhD Taoist Ju Xi. His decades of research into ancient texts confirmed that White Cloud’s Changbai Pai (Path) is at least a thousand years older than either the Northern or Southern schools (11-13th centuries c.e.). Ju Xi found evidence that Wei Boyang, the author of China’s oldest Taoist internal alchemy text (Cantong Qi, or Triplex Unity) was trained in alchemy at Mt. Changbai. He believes its oral tradition is even older – about four thousand years old.

Michael Winn dives into theChangbai’s natural alchemical fire & water field at the edge of its magnificent active volcanic lake. Read my newsletter for rmore photos and a good description of the inner alchemical process: China’s Crown Chakra: Mt. Changbai: Lineage & Origins of Healing Tao. https://www.michaelwinn.qlogictechnologies.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?rm=mode2&articleid=168

China Dream Trip 2016 will be visiting Mt. Changbai and Mt. Hua – the two most spiritually powerful mountains in China. Date is mid-August 2016, the time when weather is best at Mt. Changbai. To get on the advance notice elist, hit reply, put China Trip in the subject line.

One Cloud Lineage on Ego vs. Original Nature

One Cloud (Mantak’s teacher) was not attracted to joining any of the big, uniformed, temple-based Taoist sects in China such as Quanzhen or Zhengyi. He did not want the monastic temple life. Rather he was a Taoist who moved to remote Mt. Changbai only after 30 years of family and business life. One Cloud’s approach, and his inner alchemy formulas. is in alignment with the 2nd century Triplex Unity text.

One Cloud’s formulas start with harmonizing the body-mind with one’s worldly destiny. They gradually move up a ladder of refining Jing, Qi, and Shen (body essence, breath, & spirit) into Original Nature. This requires increasingly more subtle levels of cosmic awareness and spiritual skill in transformation. Details of One Cloud’s formulas are here: https://www.michaelwinn.qlogictechnologies.com/one_clouds_nine_tao_alchemy_formulas.html

Fast forward to today, forty years after Mantak Chia’s arrival in America in 1976. Mantak came with the intent to write ONE book about One Cloud. The vast bulk of Mantak Chia’s 35 books and 50 DVDs are focused on cultivating post-natal Qi of the body-mind (or ego). Post-natal Qi is the focus of One Cloud 1st Inner Alchemy Formula – the six other formulas teach you how to cultivate pre-natal or primordial Qi. The 1st formula is what modern people need most – immediate yiin-yang balance in energy, immediate ability to sense Qi in their body, immediate good health.

Most people want to resolve their sexual desires and relationship and health issues before they find the strength to tackle the vibrational split between spirit and matter. This is a lifetime job, working on the “separation” issue many humans feel between Heaven and Earth. The majority of students never graduate beyond One Cloud’s 1st post-natal Qi formula (now divided into three separate formulas for ease of learning). Full soul awakening using the higher formulas requires more time and discipline than they are willing to commit.

            Gradual Progress vs. Immediate Enlightenment

The 2nd century Triplex Unity text highlights that there is a higher attainment of “Great Integrity” (shang de), perhaps Wei Boyang’s term for “xing” Original Nature. But the text acknowledges that most humans need to attain progress gradually via the path of “Lesser Integrity” (xiao de). This lesser path is the gradual alchemical coupling of polarities in the body-mind. This would include male-female polarity, which is not so easy since we are born into a gendered body.

Wei Boyang, trained at Changbai mountain, used sun and moon cycles and I Ching trigram cycles to symbolically define this coupling of yin and yang. In principle, his Triplex Unity precedes the Southern School’s gradual method of self-cultivation by a thousand years, even if not using the same methods. But Boyang makes absolutely clear that the ultimate goal is soul realization of cosmic unity within a human body, not merely individuation of the personal/ego (to use the Jungian phrase).

Ego as Local Self vs. Egoism as Bad Habits of Self

Let’s return to the original  question – “which voice should I listen to?” The question itself is usually being asked by the Personality, aka the “body-mind”, the “ego” or “lesser  self”. Ego is the Latin term for “I”. It was popularized by Freud in his 1920 essay Beyond the Pleasure Principle as a symbolic description of the psyche. He saw ego as the organized, practical part of our psyche that mediates between the instinctual desires of the id and the moralistic restraining super-ego.

The heart-mind (xin) is the closest Chinese equivalent to this modern sense of ego. They view the elemental struggle between the twelve organ and bowel spirits as defining the balance of power in our psyche, which could roughly be equated as jing (= id), qi (= ego), and shen (= super-ego).

The main difference between Taoism and Freudian theory is the Taoists have a very large practical tool kit, with more tangible ways to interact with and transform these three levels. Karl Jung, Freud’s successor, knew the secret of transformation lay in alchemy, and spent the last 15 years of his life trying to penetrate alchemy’s secrets.

Egotism is a term that has acquired a different meaning. It suggests an imbalance or excess of ego, or expression of the ego’s bad habits.  But many people wrongly confuse “ego” and “egotism”, and malign the very presence of the local ego-self and its legitimate desires. Some paths suggest we stop asking the question, by getting rid of the local self. This is accomplished by denying that ego even exists, that it’s an illusion. In China, this is the position taken by Chan (Zen) Buddhists. They feel it is a waste of time to try to improve the world, and focus exclusively on cultivating their Original Nature.

Other paths try to jump quickly from the ego to a Higher Self. I find serious limitations in both the deny-the-ego and transcend-the-ego approaches. They both take you out of the Present Moment, where according to Taoist theory, all change occurs. That’s why I’m in the integrate-the-ego-with-the-soul school.

What is the Soul? How Does it Function?

Climbing impossibly difficult mountains is a physical metaphor for our personality’s quest to re-capture the original spiritual heights of our soul’s vibration when it first emerged from Source. The inverse is our soul climbing out of our mother’s womb into a tiny infant’s body, and feeling its limitations.

It takes work to get to the top of any mountain. As we get closer to the top, the impending sense of completion makes every step seem lighter and easier. Effortlessness (wu wei) is a skill that Taoists cultivate, but it arises out of skilled effort. Wu Wei is not for the lazy.

What is the soul? It’s use in western religions is very fuzzy – Christians believe you can actually lose your soul, implying it is somehow separate from our ego. Most Buddhists deny there is a soul. Taoists say we have to grow our soul spark into a mature Inner Sage.

In my view, the Soul is the invisible entity that creates the ego – our personality and its body.

I feel Soul Awakening is the key to spiritual progress as the soul is the go-between the ego and it’s own source, the oversoul. The soul is simultaneously projecting itself in opposite directions, physical and spiritual. It projects itself into a physical body-mind, an ego, with the specific purpose of learning something new. That’s why Earth is often called the School of Physical Learning. Asking the question “which voice do I listen to?” puts us on a Path to awaken us to the possibility of integrating soul and ego.

The Taoist equivalent of the western “soul” is the term “ling”, which translates as the “inner heart essence“. Taoist ling/soul is popularly known in the West as the Energy Body. The Energy Body is a subtle body vessel made of multiple layers of Qi, nested like a Russian doll. This allows Qi from our oversoul and soul to continually flow in and out of our physical body-mind/ego.

The soul also holds the keys to our Original Nature, which can only be realized via the oversoul – the causal level of collective consciousness. Taoists refer to oversoul as da shen, the great spirit. Our soul communicates directly with our oversoul, the source from which our soul emanates. This communication happens by awakening the higher vibrational frequencies in our Energy Body. In One Cloud’s path, these are activated and stabilized in the higher inner alchemy formulas.

“Kill the Ego” Approach has Serious Flaws

What voice do I (Michael Winn) personally listen to, ego or soul? I LISTEN TO BOTH. I’m in the “have your cake and eat it too” camp. I’ve found the ego is best treated like a child that needs more love and more education.

I have explored the “kill the ego” approach and found it doesn’t work. Who is supposed to “kill” the ego? The Soul?  Then how will the intangible soul function in the ego’s physical world without an embodied persona? How will it get its Earth lessons, needed for soul growth? This kill-the-ego approach throws out the baby with the bathwater. But iIt may be temporiarily useful as a technique if we are stuck in a deep rut and need to quickly dismantle our egotisical patterns.

Certainly everyone has felt the impulse to kill someone else when we are fed up with their egotistical personality patterns. We want them dead, in the sense of removing them from our life. But the more heartfelt approach is to treat them the same way you would a child who has not yet matured. You don’t kill a child because they don’t know better.

There are many adults running around with childhood issues that still “don’t know better”, even if you tell them HOW to be better. The emotional pattern they are trapped in is not rational. An emotional (and possibly traumatized) child will not easily take advice from a mental, rational adult.

Child-adult lines of communication often don’t connect. When I want to communicate with my one year old son, I have to shift into his mode of feeling. He might be throwing a tantrum and crying. When I get down on my hands and knees, and engage him at his level by crawling, he starts laughing and his imagined trauma suddenly turns into play.

Or, instead of killing the Ego as our enemy, we can take the view of Jesus: Love Thine Enemy. This a paradoxical teaching, and means to learn from those you hate most – they are your best earth-plane teachers. In this sense, our ego is our soul’s teacher. Loving it and embracing it as a necessary part of us is the solution.

Ego and Soul have different functions. They can co-exist and learn to love each other.  They need to be harmonized, not be at war with each other in a life and death struggle. Both ego and soul are overlaid into a single eternally flowing Present Moment. All change happens in this Present Moment. All ego limitation is human ignorance of the all pervading harmonious Qi field of the Tao. Lao Tzu never talks about past lives or future lives as the place of salvation. Tao only exists in the ever-flowing Present Moment, beyond-all psychic structures.

Choose Different Qigong for Ego vs. Soul Cultivation

I recommend people cultivate themselves with different types of qigong and meditation, to get a balance between cultivating the body-mind vs. soul. The majority of qigong forms cultivate post-natal Qi, which is body-mind strengthening. They boost the ego’s level of happiness.  Six Healing Sounds is a good example of an ego-healing, post-natal qigong. It releases Qi blockages in the organ spirits and reduces stress, allowing the ego or local self to function better.

But wait a minute. Doesn’t the intangible soul, with its multi-dimensional perspective, “know what is right for the ego”?  If the answer to that question is YES, then it seems logical to forget about striving for ego happiness and go straight for growing our soul awareness. Why waste time on fixing secondary egoic patterns? Why not stop the ego from making painful mistakes that cause itself and others great suffering?

This logic has great merit. It’s why I’ve developed a healing process that grows a new body-mind instead of trying to fix the broken parts of our body body or psyche. But this argument can go back and forth forever – because the ego and the soul are the outer and inner faces of the same Self.

If you accept this symbiotic relationship, our reality has to be co-created by the Personality together with the Soul. People who believe their Higher Self alone is going to solve all their problems are, in my humble opinion, delusional and basically ungrounded.

No change will happen in our worldly life unless the Personality ALIGNS with the wisdom and higher vibration of the Soul. It must allow the soul’s wisdom to download, fully aware, into this body and into this physical world. That’s why I constantly advise inviting help from higher levels of ourself. The help cannot arrive until the personality invites it. The personality-body (ego) will always be a necessary interface between between our Soul and the World.

That’s why Primordial Tai for Enlightened Love, aka Wu Ji Gong and Primordial Qigong, is such a powerful form. It is a cosmological qigong form, and thus it works on multiple levels at once. It balances our post-natal Qi, giving us medical and emotional relief.

It simultaneously aligns our ego “doing” the ceremony with our higher subtle bodies of our soul and our sense of “being’, our Original Nature. It does this by simultaneously balancing external yin-yang Qi while building up Original Qi (yuan Qi) in our core channel. If focused with clear intention, it can change our karma and speed up the evolution of our highest destiny. So it integrates the Northern  and Southern Schools, our being and our becoming, into one practice.

Can a Fish Lose the Tao? (photo)

Apparently fish are already in harmony with the Tao – they never seem to lose their Flowing Way. Likewise, a human can never truly lose their soul, even if we ignore its Presence.

Inside Chi Flows Naturally:

Dear Lovers of Cultivating Qi to Fully Attain Your Way,

I recently returned from the Super Qi Summit at Omega (upstate New York), with nine great teachers each presenting a vision of how they cultivate their own Tao (Way).

Lao Tzu makes it clear in the opening line of the Tao Te Ching that there is no single universal Way (Tao) – but only the Way that each being must follow for themselves. This Super Qi Summit was a clear demonstration of that principle of many different Ways to cultivate the Tao. The question I asked myself: what do all theseWays of cultivating Qi  have in common?

This summit was a wonderful Qi Fest, a warm and loving sharing of skills with over 160 people present. It was the brainchild of Michael Gelb, whose passion for the Qi arts and sciences goes back 40 years. Hats off to Michael, this was a winner. His latest book, Creativity on Demand, I reviewed in my newsletter on Qi as Life’s Secret Creative Sauce:  https://www.michaelwinn.qlogictechnologies.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?rm=mode2&articleid=185

What does Gelb claim to be the secret of Creativity? Simply put: Get Your Qi Flowing! He shared some of his favorite movements designed to widen our energetic embrace of what is possible. Flexible energetic movement helps get us out of our fixed ideas of what is creatively possible. Qigong cultivates a special kind of whole-body genius.

The very idea of a Qi summit was a beautiful example of Michael’s creative thinking outside of the box. It certainly got peoples Qi flowing in many new creative directions.

Minke de Vos opened the summit with a fabulous dragon dance to the sacred directions, and led a closing circle invocation that really made everyone feel they were part of a fabulous “Qi Tribe”. I think Minke is one of the highest level western female cultivators of the Tao.

Minke is sharing her integration of different medical qigong systems in Week 3 (July 3-8) of the Healing Tao summer retreats: Medical Qigong for Energy Healers. She makes it simple and powerful. In Week 2 (June 26-July 1) Minke co-teaches the Taoist Secrets of Sex and Healing Love with me. We share methods you will not find anywhere else.

Ken Cohen gave a brilliant talk and slideshow showing how multi-cultural the art and science of qigong is around the world, even though it may be named differently. He cultivates Qi using Native American Lakota methods as well as Taoist. He quoted magnificent Taoist poetry in Chinese and English to emphasize his point that “cultivating Qi” can occur in almost any medium – not just qigong movement forms.

Roger Jahnke I have known and played with for 20 years through the National Qigong Association (which is having its 20th anniversary this July 17-19th in New Jersey, see nqa.org). He focused on the fact that the so-called “debate” over the medical effectiveness of qigong is over – it’s well proven beyond any scientific doubt. The challenge is to get it into the health system, both as personal practice and in health institutions. Roger has been a great innovator and force to bring Qi cultivation into the mainstream. One of his many skills is making it fun and easy.

Tina Zhang illustrated the link between Qi cultivation and martial arts. She is a highly talented champion of many tournaments – she has a soft sweet smile, but not someone to mess with! She gave a wonderful and deeply embodied demonstration of how grasping just a few movement principles can completely change your energetic experience. Tina is teaching her favorite Taiji quan form (and mine) this summer during Week 5 of Healing Tao Summer Retreats (July 17-22): Northern Wu Taijiquan – the Final Refinement of Classical Taijiquan. She has inspiring way to link qigong and tai chi for both health and martial skill.

Robert Peng was on the Healing Tao Retreat faculty for several years and I hope to get him back from his busy global travel schedule. He distilled the essence of qigong self-healing by demonstrating the universal effectiveness of the “Four Golden Wheels of Light”. These are the three dantian and the micro-cosmic orbit connecting them together as the key to developing one’s Energy Body for healing, self-awareness in meditation, wfor any goal. Look for his new book from Sounds True.

Robert Tangora I enjoyed getting to know. He is a fantastic tai chi teacher who walks his talk and shared so many nuggets that everyone felt enriched. He focused a lot on using standing posture and conscious turning to connect to the core channel, aka “taiji pole” that runs vertically through the body. Once we open and expand this connection to our core axis, he made the very profound point that we can shift our energetic center of gravity – our dantian – to anywhere in the body.

Mingtong Gu is another old friend, based in California. Our cabins were next door to each other. I discovered during one late night talk that we both have the same idea – to build a retreat center architectually modelled after the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. So hopefully we will have twin temples, on both the east and west coast! Mingtong has a very large bag of Qi tricks, but at his summit talk he shared his metods of toning to circulate Qi in the body and harmonize body and soul for healing. He has a powerful and transformative voice. Much of his successful work focuses on working with people with life-threatening illness.

Temple of Heaven, Beijing. Built in 14th cen.without using a single nail – only dowels. So it is held together like an intricate cosmic mystery box. The three space-ship like cones are the architectual manifestation of Taoist cosmology, which centers on trinitities – 3 Treasures, 3 Pure Ones, 3 streams of Qi (Yin, Yang, Yuan), and many others.

Michael Winn (that’s me) gave a talk on the role of Taoist sexual practices within the framework of Tao Cosmology. I focused on how cultivating sexual energy via qigong and internal alchemy meditations fits into humanity’s multi-dimensional pathway of evolution.

I feel resolving humanity’s sexual identity crisis (our splitting into separate male and female bodies, causing the mythic “Fall” of humanity) is the key to both personal health and global peace. Sexual tension underlies most chronic health and political struggle and wars. The Tao trinity for healing this issue is cultivating Jing Qi at three frequencies: male + female to re-birth an androgynous Energy Body that is both male & female.

This is part of cultivating our Inner Sage – that can live in a sexually gendered body AND simultaneously hold awareness of its soul and greater Self in other planes with different sexual and a-sexual identities.

Who or what  is the Inner Sage? We have to cultivate it – it does’t pre-exist. The fruit of our Earth-school of Learning. It’s the aspects of our fragmented self that slowly iintegrate and crytallize – in classical Taoist texts – into a golden elixir-filled pearl. But in my experience, it can take many forms of sound, light, and vibration – it is simply our True Self (zhen ren) made tangible. Different than the new age Higher Self, which is usually split off from the Lower Self.

Our Inner Sage is composed of three equal parts – yet another alchemical Taoist trinity:

1. our physical body-mind (ego): (xin, heart-mind)

2. our soul or personal Energy Body: (ling, inner heart essence)

3. our impersonal oversoul or collective Spirit Body: (da shen, great spirit)

In my experience, all three aspects of Self are needed to lovingly embrace and make tangible our relationship with Source/Tao.

When I get a copy of my talk from Omega, I will post it online.

(Note: As a point of information, publication of the first volume of my Primordial Tai Chi: Way of Enlightened Love was temporarily delayed by additional deep research I was doing into Cosmological Qigong and Tai Chi forms. Without a clear cosmological map, I feel it is difficult to advance to a deep level of practice. So I had to get super-clear on this before publishing)

Back to my original question: what is the commonality of all nine of these great Qi cultivators at the Summit? Are they just nine different and uniqiue Ways, each beautiful but separate, or are they all connected by some hidden principle?

It is a beautiful synchronicity that there were 9 presenters at the Super Qi Summit – and there are 9 points of focus in the I Ching’s bagua: the 8 trigrams and the 9th spiralling center, where Original Breath (Yuan Qi) converts itself into the polar forces of Yin Qi and Yang Qi.

What was the answer my Inner Sage came up with, when I asked within?

“Every Qi cultivator is seeking a Point of Equilibrium”.

Holding that point of balance while living in the dynamic, flowing matrix of Time, Space & Beings is what allows us to attain the Tao. It has the stability of the unmoving Yuan Qi (Original Breath), but also is a Moving Point as Yin and Yang do their dance. How these function together is a paradox and beautiful mysterious secret of the Tao.

It doesn’t matter what method we use to find that point of equilibrium – the Life Force (Qi field) has no judgments or preferences about that

Can you find and hold a point of equilibrium in your life?

Tao is often translated as “Natural Way”. What exactly is this Way? It is not about following a structured Way of salvation as is usually defined by Big Religions. Nor does it require worshipping a single Creator or multiple deities who manage the creation process. That’s also why competition between lineages or methods is silly – they all can cultivate Tao, depending on what Way one wants to evolve. Choosing a Way is simply a question of karmic attraction, a.k.a. destiny.

Lao Tzu does suggest we honor and love the Qi field, the Life Force itself, which drives the cosmic process. Verse 42 epitomizes this: “All beings carry yin on their back and yang in their arms; this play of Qi fills the universe with harmony.”

A fundamental of Tao cosmology is we must learn to shape Yin Qi and Yang Qi to create our own personal Way. If we can accept this cosmic process, we’ll get to good health and inner peace quickly or at least more directly.

Qi arises from a “nameless” Source (lit. wu ji), but it seems to have an intent. The intent is to empower us human to personally and lovingly shape the universal Qi field into a higher level of harmony. Sometimes that involves struggle against the forces of dis-harmony, sometimes it flows effortlessly. Tao or Nature gives us infinite number of  “ways” as gifts to accomoplish our highest destiny.

One thing that the Omega Super Qi summit affirmed for me was the value of a community of Qi cultivators coming together and sharing their different Ways. That is exactly what I have sought to achieve over the last 20 years in creating and sustaining Healing Tao University’s summer retreats.

My goal was and is to encourage diversity and sharing of all the Tao arts and sciences, to allow folks to follow their own Way without being told they HAVE to do it any one way. Diversity leads to greater Joy in creativity.

So please get out of your armchair and study with the teachers and teachings that attract your soul!

Blessings on your Creative and Loving Way,

Michael Winn
