Inside Chi Flows Naturally: Easter: a time for fertility (eggs) and feelings of spiritual redemption – the rebirth cycle of Spring. I note that even below the equator with its reversed seasons that religious festivals follow this calendar with carnivals of music and dance preceding Easter. As the sap begins to run in the trees, the sexual and romantic feelings begin to run faster inside human bodies. Perhaps the greatest mystery in a human being is our ability to have such an amazing array of feelings, often in short order. Where do they come from? And what to do with them? Are they the noble rulers of our soul or the quicksand of our personality? This is why I always choose spring time to teach my Taoist Emotional Alchemy trainings, known as Fusion of the Five Elements. True or Original Feelings rejuvenate us and connect us to Source. Chronic emotions exhaust us and scatter our Qi (chi). But it’s all very elusive unless we have a practical method for slowing down the slippery star shower of feelings and are able to grasp their underlying essence. This is what Fusion of the Five Elements offers. How to ground the ocean swells of heart feelings – positive and negative – into our personal center of gravity in our belly. Grounding is the key. Once our feelings (or chronic emotions) are grounded, they become manageable, shapeable, dissolvable. We can contemplate them, get intimate with them. We can put their power to work in helping us dig deeper beneath their apparent surface message, into the dark roots of our subconscious where they originate. And what is hiding down in our “human root cellar?” Decoding the subconscious is the great contribution of what I call Taoist Depth Psychology. We can use the five-phase patterns of Qi flow to match the outer cycle of nature’s seasons Then we figure out which vital organ spirit our immediate moment feelings and chronic emotions are coming from: 1. anger from the liver, 2. sadness/grief from the lungs, 3. worry/obsession from the spleen/stomach, 4. impatience/guilt/hatred from the heart, 5. fear from the kidneys/bladder.

What a simple map, really. Yet so deep, such a marvelous tool for excavating who we truly are. Who could imagine that buried underneath all these seemingly imbalanced tangle of negative chronic emotions lies their very own redemption. Instead of resurrecting Jesus or some other divine figure onto which we have projected our highest feelings of divinity, we resurrect our Original and True Feelings within our own body and soul. True feelings that propel us to a high and noble destiny, right here on Earth, here and now! The Taoist secret of emotional alchemy is to set up a matrix, a kind of internal net to capture the essence of the emotions and crystallize them into a small pearl, or Qi ball. We do this right at our belly’s center of gravity, where things naturally adhere to the ground of our spiritual being. We have to gradually “fuse” the feelings back into their source within us. But unfortunately most people’s feelings are flying up around their head or the heart or in other parts of their body, or trapped in patterns of trauma or pain. It takes some training. It’s best to start with the Inner Smile and Six Healing Sounds. Then graduate to the Microcosmic Orbit and Fusion of the Five Elements. Most people do best with a teacher to help them with this. Dyed easter eggs on a Chinese silk carpet mandala (in my home). In 2007 i visited the site of Cybele near Naples.This was an ancient oracle similar to Delphi in Greece. It was located at the end of a long deep cave, and there was a very strong earth energy there. Cybele is thought by some scholars to have been the origin (about 250 b.c.) of later Christian stories of Easter. Cybele was a Phrygian fertility goddess, whose consort Attis was believed to have been born via a virgin birth. He was said to have died for three days and been resurrected each year during the period of the vernal equinox. The Christian Version of Easter vs. Pagans The early Christians in Rome battled to assert their dominance over this pagan tradition, and claimed that Cybele was a counterfeit inspired by Satan centuries earlier, preparing the way for Jesus to replace her as the real savior. Other scholars point to the Norse fertility god Oestre (root of Estrogen) and to similar stories about Egyptian deities like Horus and Osiris as the origins of Easter. If you visit Egypt, its obvious that the theme of resurrection is sexual, as these Gods are commonly depicted with an erect phallus. Apparently the ancients were not prudish in their public works, unlike some modern sexually suppressed societies.

The Christiian sects today all date their different calculation of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday on any date from March 22 to April 25th, based on a period following the full moon after the Spring Equinox. The Orthodox year-to-year sequence is so complicated that it takes 5.7 million years to repeat. Book Review: Harvard Med School Tai Chi Guide
Peter Wayne, one of my longtime inner alchemy-qigong students, has published a really good book. The book title says it is about Tai Chi, but Peter freely admits to it’s really guide to the health benefits of Qigong. Tai Chi is really just a form of qigong, usually with Tai Chi having much longer sequences of movements. Peter had patients do just a few movements, repetitively in traditional qigong style, and measured their health benefits. He also summarizes the latest health research in the field. The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi: 12 Weeks to a Healthy Body, Strong Heart, and Sharp Mind. Wayne, Peter M. and Mark L. Fuerst. You can get this on Amazon for under $10. It’s a useful reference for every practitioner. What’s inside the book? He describes how Tai Chi – Qigong offers health benefits with minimal risk of injury. You get greater flexibility and range of motion, increased coordination, better breathing, and more efficient posture. It is a useful in preventing falls, a major cause of eventual death in seniors. It improves balance and movement in people with Parkinson’s disease. Additonally , it helps us manage chronic pain and enhances our mood. The Sex Principle
Book One, Chapter VIII, The Universal One
Sir Oliver Lodge points out that man has long been familiar with force and motion, but that some third intangible, undiscovered force is recognizably necessary to complete a logical universe. Force and motion infer that the third undiscovered force is existent somewhere back of or with them. He also states that, when discovered, it may prove to be something with which man is already familiar. Sex is the great third principle. Sex is the controlling cause of both force and motion. Without it, neither could continue. To say that Mind is the motive power back of force and motion, is but stating a generality; but to state an attribute of Mind by means of which force and motion are controlled, is being specific. Sex is the motive power behind force and motion.
Sex is the apparent division of the father-mother substance of Mind into apparent opposites. This division is due to the opposite desires of electricity and magnetism, expressed in the action and reaction of the thinking process. Sex is the active desire of Mind for division into opposites, and its reactive desire for unity. Sex is that motive force which demands separability into two, and equally desires union of the apparent two into one.
Mind, being One, cannot yield to the desire of Mind for separation into two. Sex desire of Mind for divisibility into two succeeds only in producing an appearance of divisibility into two. Likewise, sex desire of Mind for unity into One succeeds only in reproducing an apparent composite of the two.
Sex is of all things from the beginning. Sex begins when light begins. Sex is the desire for the appearance of being which constitutes the appearance of existence. Nothing can be, without the desire to be. All things are which desire to be. Desire dominates all thinking. Desire dominates all matter. All desire is sex desire. All desire is for the continuance of existence in the orderliness of existence.
Sex desire is that force in thinking that continues thinking. Existence is continued only through thinking. Sex force is that quality in the electro-magnetic impulse of thinking which continues one impulse of thinking into the next impulse of thinking.
Sex force, like all phenomena of motion, is periodic. Sex periodicity continues the simple beginning of idea into the complexity of idea. Sex force is the builder of the apparently many things out of the reality of the One thing. Periodic variance of sex is the father of desire for the creation of the idea of many things. Remove the image-making faculty of the father force of Mind, and the production of idea would discontinue. Variance of sex is the mother of desire for unity of sex. Remove the sex desire of Mind for the unity of Oneness of the mother force of Mind, and reproduction of the idea of Mind would discontinue. Matter cannot continue its appearance of existence as form, without the desire to continue such an appearance of existence.
The material substance of Mind cannot evade its materialization into the form desired by Mind. This is an immutable law to which there can be no exception. Man?s concept of sex as beginning with organic life is a wrong concept. Sex is as absolute in the elements as in the complexities and compounds of the elements. Man?s concept of the beginning of sex and the beginning of life is a concept founded on conditions of temperature. Sex and life and light and intelligence are in and of all things from the beginning. The sex principle is as much a part of the granite rock or bar of iron as it is of man. The great hot star called Argo, blazing away at a temperature of thirty thousand degrees, knows sex in its fiery heart, and cannot continue its appearance without it. The Martian ice cap knows sex in its frozen depths, and retains its appearance because of sex.
Sex is an electromagnetic equalizer of matter in motion. Sex is the apparent division of the One force into electricity and magnetism,1 two opposite forces, positive and negative, which are in reality but two pulsations of the One force. Sex is the apparent division of all things into their opposites, male and female. Sex is evolutionary in all things. All things are both male and female. All creation is first male in preponderance, then it is similarly female. All light units and systems of light units are first male-female, then they are female-male. Apparent opposites of the indivisible substance of universal Mind are not content to remain in the state of apparent opposition. Unity, or Oneness, inherent in all things, asserts itself in dissatisfaction when electromagnetic forces of matter in motion are sufficiently generative to cause too great an inequality between the apparent opposites. Sex is unsatisfied when the electromagnetic forces of matter in motion are unequal, and it is satisfied when those forces are equal. A lightning flash is the power of sex equalizing positive and negative electromagnetic disturbances of equilibrium between two oppositely and unequally charged storm clouds. In motion-in-inertia, sex desire is negative. In motion-in-opposition, sex desire is positive. It is dynamic.
Sex first asserts itself in form. All form appears through sex, passes through a progressive charge called ?growth? and disappears. All growth is impelled by force and motion, and controlled by sex. Neither sex, nor force, nor motion is of itself alone. Each is of the others. Nothing is of itself alone.
There can be no force without thinking. There can be no motion without the force of thinking. There can be no idea of Mind without sex opposition. There can be no continuity of idea without sex union. Without union in mating, the idea of any one thing would be extinct as an appearance.
Thinking and working are the causes of those elements which man calls sex, force and motion. Without all three of these there could be no appearance of existence as man knows existence. Thinking and working continue the appearance of all idea from the high to the low octaves of creation.
All creating things are but the ideas of divine Mind. ?The whole idea of all things is in the seed of all things.? In the seed of idea is the whole of idea. In the seed of the oak is the whole of the oak. In the seed of the rose is the whole of the rose. In the seed of man is the whole of man. The seed of all idea is in thinking. The whole idea of the oak, or the rose, or man is the result of thinking and working for perhaps a billion years of continuing the idea of the oak, the rose, or man in the seed thereof. This is the law of evolving existence. It is as true of complex, as it is of simple things.
All idea is registered in the little particles heretofore referred to as light units. These units of light, heat, sex, electricity, and magnetism are all male and all female. Every unit is either preponderantly male or preponderantly female. Just so is every unit either preponderantly electric or preponderantly magnetic. Just so is every unit either preponderantly negatively or preponderantly positively, electromagnetic. Just so is every unit preponderantly generative or preponderantly radiative. And each unit is all of these. And each unit is variable, becoming preponderantly one or another of these in its turn, from the beginning to the end of its being.
And the variability is orderly, and governed by measurable laws of periodicity, which are also the laws by which motion is governed. It must not be forgotten that all that man calls creation is the result of motion that is due to the opposing impulses of thinking. It must not be forgotten that a continuance of motion causes a creating and not a created universe. The electromagnetic action of the impulses of thinking is continuous in its opposing, and therefore are the effects of that opposition continuous.
Opposing desire in sex expression is the cause of opposing motion. A cause cannot evade its effect. Opposing electromagnetic impulses are sex-expression in creative thinking. Opposing electromagnetic impulses reproduce all effects of creative thinking. Form is born true to the rhythm of thinking. All thinking is rhythmic thinking. Idea is synchronous with the rhythm of thinking.
All thinking is sex thinking. ?Creation? is the transforming of the One substance by the rhythmic thinking of idea into apparent opposites, and into that which man calls form. Beyond this there is no more. Creation is but a concept of Mind. It is but an illusion, an effect of thinking.
All thinking is registered in light. All light is sex expression. Light is the language of all thinking. Light is the energy of all thinking. All energy is the energy of sex expression. There is no other energy. Through evolving sex, light causes the transition of the universal substance into form. Through sex periodicity, light transforms form into variety of form.

Dear Lovers of Effortless Living,
The Tao Te Ching, or “Classic on the Natural Way to Live with Integrity” by Lao Tzu, is famous for promoting the flow that comes from living a life aligned with the Effortless Tao. It’s been a best-seller for over 2500 years – obviously it’s an appealing message. But it’s also an elusive goal, even paradoxically maddening if you use “effort” to achieve “effortless-ness”.
We now live, both in China and the West, in a culture of Over-achievers. If you don’t “try hard to win”, it feels like you might get left behind, or left without the rewards dangled before you, or left for being a “loser”.
What to do? How to “try” without “trying too hard”, and living in struggle?
I come from a family where my father went to Harvard Medical School and my mother finished her PhD courses by age 21. I was thoroughly programmed to compete. In high school I beat out 100,000 other teams to win the California State Debate Championship. I was one of three in my family who went to Stanford, Yale, or Dartmouth – Ivy colleges filled with America’s most competitive students.
I read the Tao Te Ching in college, and was deeply puzzled by it. How do you actually DO it, i.e. live that effortless life of the Tao? I dismissed it as “lovely mystical poetry”, not practical advice. It took me a long time to “unlearn” the brainwashing of my culturally biased education, the Western Way of Over-Efforting. I studied many paths, but eventually Qigong and Taoist meditation were my main tools.
25 years after graduating from college, I began leading China Dream Trips. I could not find a single Taoist monk who had graduated from college. They were all ordinary folk, who just took a yearning for the Tao, and followed their heart.

Lao Tzu carries a gourd with primal Elixir of Yin-Yang Qi next to his heart, and he has a smile on his face. All are secrets clues to surrendering to the Effortless Way.

Here’s my advice, as a Western Taoist, after playing with this “don’t struggle” conundrum for 33 years.
FIVE STEPS TO EFFORTLESS LIVING
1. Go Slow. Take a deep breath, exhale whenever you feel frustrated. Every out breath is a mini “Letting Go”. Most people inhale more than they exhale. This is unconscious cultural programming to grasp after life energy. Practice balancing your breath before you take on your entire life. 2. Ground yourself witih Conscious Movement. Sports, dance, exercise, or hiking will all help, but their benefits disperse without constant effort, because their focus is often external. That mens your Qi (same as Chi, both pronounced “chee”) is flowing out of your body. “”Qi flows where your Mind goes” is a famous Tao saying. When you ground your entire body with qigong movement, it feels effortless, and the focus is consciously internal.
I find qigong is deeper than other kinds of exercise, because it feels more likely to stick, i.e. the Qi keeps flowing inside your body long after you stop practicing. That gives you a solid platform from which to proceed in your outer life- you are now grounded and filled with balanced energy. Your odds of creating an effortless life just went up 100%. Inner patterns of your psyche will unfold in your outer life.
3. Cut yourself a lot of slack. Impatience is Enemy No. 1 on your path to the Effortless Way. Inner Smile to your heart, ask it what it TRULY needs in any given situation. Usually it’s something simple, and not what everyone else wants – and certainly not worth lying, stealing, or cheating to get it. If you follow that inner heart voice, doorways will begin to open for you, effortlessly. Your heart is wired into the heart of the Cosmos, what Taoists call Original Spirit. Clear heart is essential to infusing “te”, integrity, into to one’s Qigong cultivation practice. I know an American female martial artist who spent 30 years cultivating her Qi. She is very talented, and has undoubtedly helped many students. But she is personally still angry and over controlling. There is a danger that building more Qi without an equal infusion of Integrity (te) from your shen (spirit) can amplify the struggle in your life.
4. Study with different Taoist teachers. Each one has different discoveries to share. They can save you years of struggle. Having the Right Attitude / Heart + Right Method is the best short cut to avoiding an excruciating series of painful life lessons. This is about finding the discipline right for you, what I call True Effort, that will graduallyreward you with increased ease and good health.
5. Cultivate a direct relationship with the Life Force, or Original Qi. This is the most Direct Method. Original Qi (literally Original Breath) holds our memory of Original Integrity with the Tao. That is our original state of Oneness, what is called Divine Love. Cultivating Original Breath is the goal of my teaching qigong + inner alchemy meditation together. Can we breathe this Original Breathe into a world filled with polluted, negative energy that is trapped and stuck, struggling within the physical plane?
Cultivating this Original Breath requires True Effort, which is not NOT STRUGGLE. Struggle is caused by disharmony between yiin and yang forces. True Effort feels rewarding, like you are completing your destiny, even though it is hard work — perhaps the hardest work of your entire life. But you will be given the Qi necessary to complete any difficult task required to complete your Highest Destiny. It’s unique to each person – that High Destiny given to us by the Tao is what Lao Tzu wants us to surrender to.
Ultimately all Grace, what Taoists call “wu wei”, or “living spontaneously” (literally “action without effort”), comes from aligning and allowing the Original Qi to flow into the physical plane as harmonious yin-yang energy flow. It flows in a continous orbit, from Source/Tao, through collective spirit, into your soul, and finally into your body-mind. There it hits the Resistance, what causes struggle, and it must be transformed before it can flow back to Source again to continue the orbit.
Harmonizing this orbital flow is what Taoists alchemists call cultivating the Three Treasures, the harmony of Jing, Qi, and Shen. When Qi flows freely between all three layers of your physical, energy, and spirit bodies, you experience true integrity and will effortlessly express the Tao within the microcosm of your personal life.
Can you allow your energy flow to be as transparent as this butterfly’s transmission of Clear Light?
Tao is multi-dimensional. The only thing you can take with you at the moment of death – when you change dimensions – is your Integrity. You leave your family, reputation, wealth, and toys behind. Our potential for learning, for gaining Integrity within a human lifespan, is part of a much greater infinite process.
So don’t get hung up on a fixed end goal of what salvation, enlightenment, divine love or immortality is “supposed” to be like. It’s never like what we project it to be. What your soul truly needs will arise naturally and effortlessly in your daily life — once you enter into a state of Openness to the flow of Tao, to the Life Force that holds the absolute integrity of this cosmos.
This Openness to flow of Tao is not the same as striving to achieve “no-mind”, which all too often people interpret as “no-body” and “no-self” as well. Openness to flow of Tao is not a denial of our personal responsibility as a an Embodied Self. Rather it’s the ultimate integration of worldly (body) attention and discipline raised to the high spiritual level of True Effortlessness. The combination of self-discipline in cultivation of Qi + surrender to our innate Integrity inspires the Natural Presence or Original Spirit hidden in the core of our Embodied Self to flow into our body-mind’s daily life. You can cal it wisdom.
Letting Go involves a lot of Trust in the Life Force…but everyone has a different level in what they will trust their body to experience. Doing something radical like sky-diving can open you up to a new level of trust: can you surrender to “diving into the Earth”? That’s what sky diving is really about.
Study With Many Different Teachers of the Way!
I’d like to highlight my point #4, about getting different teacher’s viewpoints as key to breaking your own fixed, unconscious patterns of struggle. One of the reasons I sponsor 20 week long Tao retreats in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina is because I love promoting diversity and the richness it brings to teachers and students alike. Teachers can only teach from their own essence. We each respond to different teachers based on our resonance to their essence and their life’s sharing.
Let me share a little about some of the amazing teachers, and link to videos that some of them have made. I won’t talk about my own Qigong Fundamentals, Healing Love and Kan & Li Inner Alchemy track, because you hear about me all the time.
Minke de Vos
Minke de Vos has integrated in Week 1 an amazing system of Medical Qigong for energy healers who want the best of the Healing Tao + other medical qigong systems. Minke is a wonderful free spirit and one of the most senior of Healing Tao Senior Instructors, with nearly 30 years experience. She co-teaches Healing Love/Taoist Sexology, one of the highlights of my summer, and has published high level training materials for women.
David Twicken
I call David Twicken the “master of Taoist cycles”. His integration of Chinese astrology, qigong, alchemy, feng shui, and Chinese Medicine is without parallel. I just reviewed his forthcoming book on Eight Extraordinary Vessels, which was a terrific addition to his many other books. In Week 1 he’ll be integrating Primordial Qigong and Fusion 2/3, the MacroCosmic Orbit/8 Extra Vessels, and Rejuvenation Qigong. Don’t miss him! He also has a weekend on Chinese Medical Astrology and 5 Elements Qigong the first half of Week 2.
Andrew McCart
Andrew McCart is new to our summer faculty, but a familiar face with over 12 years in the Healing Tao and currently on the Healing Tao Instructor’s Association board of directors. He has acquired amazing skills by studying with more than 11 Senior Instructors on 3 continents, and will teach Tai Chi Qigong (Week 3), Tao Yin (Taoist Yoga in Week 4), and co-teach Fusion 1 & Iron Shirt with Steven Sy (Week 2). In his other life he is a talented professor at Purdue University. In his Tao life, he has three black belts and mastered many healing modalities, including Chi Nei Tsang, Reiki, Acupressure and Medical Qigong. Steven Sy
Steven Sy is another new faculty addition, but a very familiar face at our summer retreats as the long time bookstore manager. Steven has also acquired a lot of wisdom by moderating the Healing Tao USA online Forum, which has had nearly 14 million hits. Steven is Vice President of the Healing Tao Instructor’s Association and over 900 hours of training. He has long been overdue to start teaching Iron Shirt (Week 2). His discipline and root are awesome, he is a master of precision in posture. Iron Shirt is a perfect followup to any of the Week 1 courses- everyone needs more grounding.

Frank Allen and Tina Zhang are the dynamic duo of the NYC martial arts scene, with over 60 years teaching experience between them, won innumerable competition awards, and published definitive books on Bagua and Northern Wu Taijiquan. They go to China every year to refine their skills and we are delighted to have them share their rare knowledge at our summer retreats. Frank is finally releasing his main teacher’s secret lineage form that integrates tai chi, wu xing (5 elements), and bagua zhang. Tina’s Northern Wu Tai Chi form always gets passionate raves, and Frank is world class. Their courses are in the same week 5, so you have to pick one of them!
Jampa Stewart
Jampa Stewart is also one of the most Senior of Healing Tao Seniors, past President of the National Qigong Association, a Chinese medical doctor, accomplished martial artist and meditator, and master of deep organ massage. He is teaching both Chi Nei Tsang levels 1 and 2. We are very lucky to have him visiting from his mountain retreat in Crestone, Colorado. Jampa is highly skilled, funny, and will take you on a deep healing journey.

China Dream Trip May 2014 will visit the famous Hanging Temples of Mt. Heng, the Taoist sacred mountain of the North. Details below include the “Taoist Dream Caves” atop Huashan. Dear Dreamers of the Tao – the Natural Way, Hope you’ve been having lots of summer fun. The Tao Summer Retreats near Asheville were fabulous, as usual. See below for a video clip from my Medical and Spiritual Qigong Fundamentals retreat. This 2.5 minute video is about how to root oneself. When I first started training, I got pushed over immediately by just one person. This is a trainable skill, with many benefits to health, emotional grounding, and spiritual self-cultivation. That all depends on your skill level in creating realities. I recently recorded a 40 minute interview on Taoist dream practice and a lucid dreaming qigong form I developed for my personal practice (available with the special discount this month).This youtube interview was an advance presentation at an international Lucid Dream Conference in London Nov. 9-11, which includes a one day Lucid Dreaming Qigong seminar by me afterwards. The youtube interview goes deep into my personal history as a lucid dreamer since I was a teenager. My night life got so active, I eventually ran a “Night School” in which I taught my day time friends the art of Lucid Flying in the dream world. I also explore the relationship between Taoist qigong and internal alchemy meditation, which has greatly raised my skill level and blurred the line between my day and night realities. My integration of qigong and Taoist internal alchemy has allowed me to go in my daytime meditations to the same realms that are possible in the dream plane. The point of Tao dream practice is to take some shortcuts, as there is less resistance in the astral plane. But dream practice doesn’t necessarily give day time skill, so you need inner alchemy skill (neidan gong) to achieve complete mastery of one’s destiny. My final conclusion: there is only One Self, dreaming both the day and night realities! But functioning from that Self (vs. the personality) requires discipline and training. I’m attending an international Qigong and Longevity Conference at the base of Changbaishan, or “Eternal White Mountain”. I’ve been wanting to visit this mountain for over 30 years, ever since I began my study of One Cloud’s Tao Inner Alchemy Formulas for Achieving Immortality. Changbaishan is a giant volcano with a lake on top (Lake Tianchi) in the far north of China – north of North Korea. The energy of this mountain is perfect for practicing internal alchemy, with its “water-above-fire” positioning of natural forces matching the “kan & li” alchemy formulas. A similar situation exists in Santorini, Greece, where I taught a series of very powerful alchemy retreats. We were in a small village perched on the side of a volcano that had filled with ocean, but still had hot fumerols rising up in the watery cauldron. Mantak Chia tells me his teacher One Cloud climbed the mountain, but found a warm cave within it to practice in for seven years. There are hot springs at the base of the mountain, fed by volcanic fires below. This mountain is where One Cloud found a hermit teacher who trained him to the level of breatharian, and later passed on these formulas to Mantak Chia.
